The 2017 Awards

The awards were held at the AFL-CIO headquarters in Washington, DC. The inspiring evening proudly celebrated Sarita Gupta, Executive Director of Jobs With Justice (JWJ) and David B. Durkee, International President of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers' International Union (BCTGM).
In addition to Sarita Gupta and David B. Durkee, IWJ honored Maria Perez and Crispin Hernandez. Both are workers, now activists, who have taken up the banner for their fellow workers to fight the violation of worker rights and wage theft.
  1. Managing Director
As a dairy farm worker, Crispin Hernandez worked 12-hours, six days a week shifts. The work was hard, fast and constant, and pressure-filled. Often times, not allowing time for even a half-hour break to eat lunch, drink water or go to the bathroom, without falling behind. With increased work accidents and deaths, Crispin organized a workers’ committee at the farm. After being fired, he mobilized workers and allies to protest. He was also featured in The New York Times. IWJ is proud to highlight the amazing work being done by Workers’ Center of Central New York worker leader, Crispin Hernandez.
  2. Managing Director
Maria Perez immigrated to America from Mexico for better living conditions for her family. She worked in the poultry industry. In 2012, she joined NWA Workers’ Justice Center as a volunteer and quickly learned that she had worker rights that would help better her conditions. She participated in health & safety training, advocating for labor rights and personal growth training. She represented the Center nationally in the fight towards an immigration reform and met with USDA representatives to stop increasing line speed in poultry plants. These accomplishments led IWJ to honor Maria.
